2. Manual Gearbox

The VW 181 has a 4-speed manual gearbox:

  • Take your time with each gear shift, pressing the clutch all the way down.
  • Reverse gear: To engage reverse, press the gear lever down vertically, push it all the way to the left, then pull it back (next to 2nd gear).
Tip: This is a vintage vehicle. If a gear doesn't engage smoothly, briefly return to neutral, release then press the clutch again before re-engaging the gear.

4. Windshield & Doors

For the full "Safari" experience, the windshield can be folded down flat onto the front hood:

  • Unhook the two interior latches above the windshield.
  • Fold the windshield forward.
  • Be sure to lock it into the stop fasteners provided on the hood so it doesn't move while driving.
  • The doors can also be easily unhinged to drive completely open.

5. Driving Tips

  • Braking: The original drum brakes require you to anticipate braking distances well in advance. Drive carefully and keep a large safety distance.
  • Steering: With no power steering, the wheel is heavy when the vehicle is stationary. Avoid turning the wheel while parked; always keep the vehicle rolling slightly to maneuver without straining.
